What we look at
Pre-purchase checklist
- Rust: body, rocker panels, wheel wells, subframe and frame
- Signs of past accident repair: panel gaps, paint mismatch, overspray
- Leaks: oil, coolant and other fluids
- Tires: tread depth and uneven wear
- Brakes: what we can see, plus the emergency brake
- Dash warning lights and lights around the car
- Glass: windshield cracks and chips
You get a plain-language summary of what we found. If something needs fixing, a partner shop can give you a written quote, which helps when you negotiate.
Buying in Ontario
Quick tips before you pay
- From a private seller, ask for the Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP). Sellers are required to give it to you.
- From a dealer, check that they are registered with OMVIC.
- "As is" means no safety certificate. You'll need one before you can plate the car.
- Never pay a deposit before you have seen the car in person.

Questions
Good to know
Is a pre-purchase check the same as a safety certificate?
No. A pre-purchase check tells you what we found so you can decide. A Safety Standards Certificate can only come from an MTO licensed inspection station.
The seller says the car is sold 'as is'. What does that mean?
In Ontario, an 'as is' car is sold without a safety certificate. You will need one before you can put plates on it, so it is worth knowing what it may need first.
Do you work for the dealer?
Our check is for you. If we have any referral relationship with the dealer selling the car, we tell you before the check.
Can you check a car I found on Marketplace or Kijiji?
Yes, with the seller's permission and an appointment. Send us the listing and we will set it up.
