Where rust starts
Salt finds the same spots every winter
- Wheel wells and arches. Salt and slush get packed in and stay wet.
- Rocker panels. The strip under the doors. Often rusts from the inside out.
- Door bottoms and trunk lid edges. Drain holes clog and water sits.
- Subframe and frame rails. The structure of the car. This is where rust matters most for safety.
- Brake and fuel lines. Small, easy to miss, and important.
Honest answer
Cosmetic or structural?
Surface rust is orange discolouration on the paint or metal. It looks bad but is usually cosmetic if caught early.
Scale rust is bubbling, flaking metal. It is spreading and should be dealt with before next winter.
Rust holes mean the metal has rusted through. Holes in structural areas usually need repair before a vehicle can pass a safety inspection.

Good to know
How much does rust repair cost?
It depends on where the rust is and how far it has gone. A small patch on a wheel arch is a very different job from a frame rail. After the inspection, the partner shop gives you a written quote before any work starts.
Will fixing the rust make my car pass a safety inspection?
We can't promise that. Only the licensed inspector decides, and they check the whole vehicle. Fixing structural rust properly removes one of the most common reasons cars fail.
Is my rust just cosmetic?
Surface rust on a body panel is usually cosmetic. Bubbling paint, flaking metal or holes, especially on rocker panels, subframes or frame rails, need a closer look. Send photos and we'll tell you honestly.
Is it worth repairing rust on an older car?
Sometimes not. If the repair would cost more than the car is worth, we will tell you so you can decide.
Do you issue safety certificates?
No. We are not an MTO licensed inspection station. We help you get ready, and a licensed station does the safety inspection and issues the certificate if the car passes.
